Late Night Revision

Exam season is well underway, I’ve got 5 exams left and I can’t wait for it to be over!! Seriously, I’m counting down the days. It’s strange knowing I still don’t have an upper-hand in knowing what my preferred revision technique is and its frustrating. I’ve written all my lectures notes for the majority of my modules – with 1 or 2 lectures to complete for a few modules. I then print out my notes, highlight the key information and re-write little summary notes on post-it notes on  pages I feel important. After reading the majority of my notes, it’s then implementing the right technique to consolidate the information I find difficult.

So, over the past years, I would make condensed sheet notes for each lecture. I try my best to limit it to only 2 pages (back and front). This year, It’s taking longer than usual to make condensed notes, just because we have more detailed lecture slides and we’re require to go beyond the syllabus and actually read review papers and primary articles as a source of extra reading. Trying to find the best and efficient way to revise – under LIMITED time has been proven somewhat difficult. I’ve been watching a few study videos here and there, and I’ve gaged ACTIVE RECALL seems to be one of the most effective ‘study smart’ techniques to use in revision. To implement this, I’ve decided to go through each lecture again – but re-writing sections I feel are important  on either a lined or plan sheet of paper without looking at the lecture to see what I can remember. Obviously, my revision tactic is bound to change for  different subject modules. For example, for Advanced Immunology, I think it would be helpful to make A4 posters on each lecture – to have everything at hand to read at once quickly; just because advanced immunology is so detailed and has so many key word and phrases that are a must to know. For clinical pharmacology, I’m hoping to use flashcards or an online version of flashcards,  Anki/Quizlet to remember drugs and their actions etc.

Late nights are must around exam season, but I always make sure to go to bed no later than 2AM, to have a more routine wake-up schedule because I don’t want to mess up my sleeping pattern during exams. I usually take power naps during the days, It could be 20 minutes to an 1 hour. My friends/study buddies don’t approve of this. But sometimes when I feel saturated, and have a nap, waking up feel refreshed helps me a lot more in remembering my lectures. But obviously, the nap time naturally declines towards exam day.

This period is obviously a very stressful and challenging time, not only for me but also my friends. By having comfort in the one source of peace, joy, and sound mind, I am assured that by His grace and through Faith that the promises of God upon my life shall come to pass.  And it’s as simple as that – by centring Jesus in every aspect of my life, including my education, a burden is lifted off me.

Love, D
